Child mortality has been reduced by 41% over the past 20 years, mainly due to improved prevention and treatment of malnutrition and infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries. Still the vast majority of pediatric deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, where millions of children continue to die of preventable causes or suffer from illnesses for which treatments have been well described.
Incidence and attention to non-communicable and pediatric disease is currently increasing also in less affluent regions of the world. Clinical referral-level hospital care for children with chronic disease or disabilities is emerging as a significant but under-addressed need that is relevant, possible, and appropriate, for all children. In settings were the under-five mortality is decreasing, the Lund University center for global pediatric healthcare is committed also to the neglected care of children with diseases such as cancer, congenital malformations, injuries and complications of prematurity.
The center for global pediatric healthcare at Lund University gathers clinicians and academics committed to international partnership for global pediatric health and the reduction of mortality and disability for children through education, research and clinical training.
